About the PNG Format
The PNG Format (P.ortable N.etwork G.raphics) is a standard image format created to offer lossless compression, advanced transparency support and designed to be platform independent. The format is defined by both ISO/IEC and W3C standards and it has a highly structured internal architecture that guarantees error detection and long term compatibility.
Lossless Compression
PNG uses the DEFLATE compression algorithm which is the same method used in ZIP archives. The DEFLATE algorithm combines LZ77 compression with Huffman entropy coding to preserve every pixel without any loss of picture quality. This ensures that PNG files do not degrade after repeated saves.
Chunk-Based File Structure
PNG image files are organized into a series of blocks, each of which containing a type, length, CRC checksum and data block. This file structure provides internal validation which in turn makes PNG files highly extensible.
