How resizing works
Resizing is the quickest way to shrink a PNG. File size scales roughly with the number of pixels, so halving the width and height typically cuts the file to about a quarter of its size. It's also how you prepare images for specific slots, like a 1200 pixel wide blog header or a 512 pixel app icon.
Enter a width, a height, or both. With only one filled in, the other follows to keep the proportions. With both filled in, the image is scaled to fit inside that box unless you tick “Stretch to the exact size”. You can also resize by percentage. Making an image smaller keeps it sharp. Making it larger can't add detail, so enlarged images look soft.
Good to know
- Shrinking keeps quality. Enlarging makes images look soft.
- The output is always PNG with transparency kept.
- To both resize and convert format, resize first and then use a converter.
Frequently asked questions
Will resizing keep the transparent background?
Yes. The output is a PNG with its alpha channel.
How do I resize without stretching?
Fill in only the width or only the height, or fill in both and leave “Stretch to the exact size” unticked. The image then keeps its proportions.
Can I make the image bigger?
Yes, but enlarging can't create detail, so the result looks softer. Start from the largest original you have.
How many files can I process at once?
Up to 50 files, each up to 100 MB. Download everything as a ZIP.
