About PNG to AVIF conversion
AVIF is based on the AV1 video codec and usually produces smaller files than JPG and WebP at comparable visual quality, especially for photographs and images with smooth gradients. It supports transparency, high dynamic range and wide color, and current versions of Chrome, Firefox, Safari and Edge can display it.
Encoding AVIF is slower than other formats, so this page converts when you click Convert instead of on every change. Not every browser can create AVIF files itself. If yours can't, the image is converted on our server instead and the page says so. Software support outside browsers is still patchy, so keep a JPG or PNG copy for anything that might open in older editors or on older devices.
What happens to transparency
AVIF keeps transparency, including soft edges, so a transparent PNG converts without a background fill.
When AVIF is the right choice
- Website images where bandwidth and load speed matter most
- Photo-heavy pages that serve large images
- Serving modern browsers with a JPG or WebP fallback
When to use something else
- Files you email or share with non-technical recipients
- Editing workflows in older software
- Archiving. Keep the PNG master.

Frequently asked questions
Is AVIF smaller than WebP?
Often, yes, particularly for photos. The gap depends on the image, so compare both on your own files.
What quality should I use for AVIF?
AVIF quality numbers don't match JPG's. Values around 50 to 65 are often visually similar to JPG at 80 to 90. Test your own images and pick the lowest value that still looks right.
Why does conversion say it used the server?
Many browsers can't create AVIF files. When yours can't, the page falls back to server conversion and shows a note. Where your browser can encode AVIF, nothing is uploaded.
Can everyone open AVIF files?
All current major browsers display them, but some image editors, social platforms and older devices don't. Keep a JPG or PNG copy for sharing.
Are my files uploaded?
Only when your browser can create AVIF itself, which most can't yet. Otherwise the image is sent over HTTPS to our server, converted, and deleted automatically within 30 minutes. The page tells you before that happens.
How many PNG files can I convert at once?
Up to 50 files, each up to 100 MB. Add them together and download everything as a ZIP.
