PNG to BMP converter

Convert PNG to standard 24-bit BMP. Fast and uncompressed, for older Windows programs, embedded displays and tools that need raw pixels.

How to convert PNG to BMP

  1. Add your PNG filesDrag them onto the box, click it to browse, or paste an image from your clipboard. You can add up to 50 files at a time.
  2. Choose your BMP optionsPick the color that fills transparent areas. Optionally limit the longest side of the image. Results update as you change the options, and you can see the file size before and after for every image.
  3. Download the resultSave files one by one, or use Download all as ZIP when you've converted several.

About PNG to BMP conversion

BMP stores pixels almost raw, with no compression. That makes files large but trivially simple to read, which is why embedded devices, legacy Windows programs, some game engines and certain lab and industrial software still ask for it.

This converter writes standard 24-bit BMP files that open in virtually every program. Expect the file to be several times larger than the PNG: a 24-bit BMP uses three bytes per pixel, so a 1920 by 1080 image is about 6 MB regardless of content.

What happens to transparency

A 24-bit BMP has no transparency, so transparent areas are filled with the background color you choose, white by default. If you need transparency, convert to PNG, WebP or TIFF instead.

When BMP is the right choice

  • Software or firmware that specifically requires BMP
  • Embedded displays and microcontroller projects
  • Teaching, testing and graphics experiments that need simple pixel data

When to use something else

  • Web use and email. The files are large.
  • Long-term storage. Use PNG or TIFF, which are lossless and much smaller.
  • Anything that needs transparency

Frequently asked questions

Why is my BMP so large?

BMP doesn't compress pixel data. Every pixel takes three bytes, so the file size depends only on the image dimensions.

Does BMP support transparency?

Some BMP variants have an alpha channel, but support is inconsistent. This converter writes 24-bit BMP files with the transparent areas filled in.

Can I create an 8-bit or indexed BMP here?

Not at the moment. For indexed color, convert to GIF or use our compress PNG tool to create a reduced-color PNG.

Are my files uploaded?

No. The conversion runs in your browser, so your images never leave your device.

How many PNG files can I convert at once?

Up to 50 files, each up to 100 MB. Add them together and download everything as a ZIP.
