Compress PNG

Make PNG files smaller. Choose lossless re-encoding or reduce colors for much smaller files, and see exactly how much you saved.

How to use the Compress PNG tool

  1. Add your PNG filesDrag them onto the box, click it to browse, or paste an image. Up to 50 files at a time.
  2. Adjust the optionsResults update as you change them, and every file shows its size before and after.
  3. DownloadSave each file, or download everything as a ZIP.

How compression works

PNG files get large for two reasons: they have a lot of pixels, or they store more colors than they need. This tool tackles the second problem. In “Smaller files” mode it reduces the image to a palette of up to 256 colors, the technique used by tools like pngquant, which can shrink flat graphics, screenshots and illustrations dramatically with little visible change. In “Lossless only” mode it only re-encodes the data more efficiently, so the image looks exactly the same.

Photographs and images with very smooth gradients may look banded when reduced to few colors. If that happens, raise the maximum colors, turn on dithering, or switch the format: JPG or WebP are far better for photos than any PNG compression. If the result isn't smaller than your original, the tool keeps your original and tells you so.

Good to know

  • Best on logos, UI screenshots, charts and illustrations.
  • Photos usually shrink more by converting to WebP or JPG.
  • If compression doesn't help, your original is kept unchanged.

Frequently asked questions

Is compressing a PNG lossless?

Lossless only mode re-encodes without changing how the image looks. Smaller files mode reduces the number of colors, which is lossy but often invisible on flat graphics.

How much smaller will my PNG get?

It depends on the image. Flat graphics and screenshots often shrink by more than half in reduced-color mode. Photos usually don't, so convert those to WebP or JPG instead.

Does this keep transparency?

Yes. Reduced-color PNGs keep transparency, including soft edges.

Are my images uploaded?

No. Compression runs in your browser.

How many files can I process at once?

Up to 50 files, each up to 100 MB. Download everything as a ZIP.
